You want a desktop computer now? (That's what I use because of the better screen and keyboard, plus space to mess up with hardware which is a hobby of mine, but laptops are convenient for vacations etc.) Consider an Athlon XP 3000+, it'll be more than enough; my 2 year old Athlon XP 1800+ is still kicking ass becuase software hasn't evolved that much. For example, I can run Halo in maximum detail at 75 fps, with just a Radeon 9600 Pro. Oh and that; unless you want to play the latest PC games with the maximum detail at 75+ fps, you won't really need a 9800, it's quite expensive and not worth for non-PC gamers. If you're really into it you might want it though, but I don't think games take advantage of half of it. BTW, get 512 or 768 MB RAM though, that's really useful though, and a 160 GB hard disk will come in handy ^_^.

Since this laptop needs a buncha shit fixed, I figured I might as well make the update now, rather than later.

Also, all that power will last you longer as games do need more power.

IRT OCB: Also, all that power will last you longer as games do need more power.
This is true but prices don't scale. Sometimes it's more convenient to aim for a cheapest one and replace it later. Think of this (note: the following case is entirely fictional, and oversimplified beyond measure.)
Today's games eat 40 PowerMarks?.
Games in 2 years will eat 80 PowerMarks?.
Games in 4 years will eat 160 PowerMarks?.
Card 1: offers 80 PowerMarks for $100.
Card 2: offers 160 PowerMarks for $400.
Not only card 1 has a twice as high power to price to power ratio, but in 2 years, the cards available will be:
Card 3: offers 160 PowerMarks for $100.
Card 4: offers 320 PowerMarks for $400.
So you have 2 options:
A) Go for Card 2, which will last 4 years for $400
B) Go for Card 1, which will last 2 years for $100, then buy Card 3, which will last another 2 years for $100
Total spent:
A) $400
B) $200, plus you're getting a new one which will come with new toys your 2 year old card doesn't have, and you can use the old one for a secondary computer.
This is, as I said, an oversimplification, but you can get the idea. Evaluate all the possibilities and decide what is best for you. The website I recommend to find serious, unbiased benchmarks, and good quality/price ratios, is http://www.tomshardware.com . It's my hardware magazine of choice, those people are real serious and real good [stamps Wiseman's seal of quality ^_^].

In the BIOS settings, make sure your front bus speed is set to 133 MHz and your CPU multiplier is set to 11.5. 133.333 ? 11.5 = 1533.333 MHz as intended. Either that or use some program to change it should you have it installed.
